Family Planning, Land, and Livelihoods: Why Population Growth is at the Heart of Burundi's Development Crisis

Published on 11 June 2026 at 00:05

Burundi is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa. With a rapidly growing population and a land area of just over 27,000 square kilometres, the pressure on land, food, and employment has never been greater.

At Holistic Impact Hub, we believe that honest, respectful conversations about family planning are not just a health issue — they are a development issue, a food security issue, and a human dignity issue.

THE LAND CRISIS

Burundi's economy is deeply agricultural. More than 90% of the population depends on farming for their survival. But as families grow larger across generations, land is divided and subdivided between children and grandchildren — until individual plots become too small to produce enough food for a single household.

Today, millions of Burundian families cultivate plots of land measured in square metres, not hectares. The result is chronic food insecurity, malnutrition, and a cycle of poverty that is incredibly difficult to break.

When there is not enough land to farm, families cannot feed themselves. When families cannot feed themselves, children drop out of school. When children drop out of school, the next generation inherits the same crisis.

THE UNEMPLOYMENT CRISIS

Burundi's youth population is growing rapidly. But the economy — still heavily dependent on subsistence agriculture — is not growing fast enough to absorb hundreds of thousands of young people entering the workforce each year.

The result is widespread youth unemployment and underemployment. Young people with energy, intelligence, and ambition find themselves with no economic opportunity. This frustration, when left unaddressed, fuels social instability, conflict, and migration.

THE ROLE OF FAMILY PLANNING

Family planning is not about telling families how many children to have. It is about giving every family — especially every woman and every couple — the information, the resources, and the freedom to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.

When women and couples have access to family planning education and services, they can space births appropriately, protect maternal and child health, plan their economic futures, and invest more deeply in each child's education and well-being.

Countries that have invested in family planning have seen dramatic improvements in maternal health, child nutrition, educational attainment, and economic growth.

WHAT HOLISTIC IMPACT HUB IS DOING

HIH integrates reproductive health education and family planning awareness into our community programs. We work with women, men, and young people to promote informed decision-making, gender equality in reproductive choices, and access to health services.

We also work on sustainable livelihoods and agricultural innovation — helping families produce more from less land through modern farming techniques, cooperative models, and income diversification.

A CALL FOR HONEST DIALOGUE

Burundi's development future requires honest, courageous conversations about population, land, and sustainability. These are not comfortable conversations — but they are necessary ones.

HIH is committed to leading those conversations with respect, compassion, and a deep commitment to human dignity.
