Forgotten on the Streets: The Crisis of Malnutrition and Healthcare Among Burundi's Street Children

Published on 10 June 2026 at 21:23

Every morning in Bujumbura, hundreds of children wake up on the streets. No warm meal. No clean water. No parent to check their fever or comfort their pain. These are Burundi's street children and abandoned youth — among the most vulnerable and most forgotten members of our society.

At Holistic Impact Hub, we see them. And we believe their lives matter.

THE REALITY OF MALNUTRITION AMONG STREET CHILDREN

Malnutrition is one of the most devastating and silent crises affecting street children in Burundi. Without access to regular, nutritious meals, these children suffer from stunted growth, weakened immune systems, and impaired cognitive development — consequences that follow them for life.

Many street children survive on food scraps, leftover market waste, or go entire days without eating. The lack of a balanced diet — proteins, vitamins, vegetables, and clean water — makes them highly vulnerable to illness, infection, and long-term developmental damage.

THE HEALTHCARE GAP

Beyond nutrition, street children face an almost complete absence of healthcare access. When they fall sick — and they fall sick often — there is no one to take them to a clinic, no money for medicine, and no system that reliably reaches them.

Common illnesses like malaria, respiratory infections, skin diseases, and waterborne diseases go untreated for weeks or months. Without intervention, minor conditions become serious, and serious conditions become life-threatening.

Mental health is equally neglected. Many street children carry deep psychological trauma from abandonment, abuse, violence, or loss. Without psychosocial support, these wounds fester and shape their futures in devastating ways.

WHO ARE THESE CHILDREN?

Street children in Burundi come from many backgrounds. Some have been abandoned by families unable to provide for them. Others have fled abuse or conflict. Some are orphans of disease or displacement. Many come from extremely poor households where parents, despite their love, simply cannot meet basic needs.

They are not statistics. They are children — with names, with dreams, with the same right to health, dignity, and opportunity as any other child.

WHAT HOLISTIC IMPACT HUB IS DOING

HIH believes that every child deserves protection, nourishment, and care. Through our integrated programs, we work to:

Provide nutritional support and food assistance to vulnerable children in our communities. Offer psychosocial support and trauma-informed care for children who have experienced abandonment or abuse. Connect street children and their families to healthcare services and community health resources. Advocate for systemic change — pushing for stronger child protection policies and social safety nets in Burundi.

A CALL TO ACTION

The crisis of street children in Burundi is not inevitable. It is the product of poverty, inequality, and systems that have failed the most vulnerable. But it can be changed — with the right investment, the right partnerships, and the right commitment.
